The things I've found out about the Congo are astonishing. I really can't fathom how someone could commit such acts of terror and violence. It disgusts me to know that not only are these things going on on a daily basis, but the United States and several other countries have done virtually nothing to stop the atrocities. I think what disgust me the most, is the lack of action being taken because I believe that the situation in the DRC could be stopped. The other thing that immensely bothered me about this situation, is the fact that every person owning a cell phone and various other electronic devices has directly supported the conflict, knowingly and unknowingly.
It's hard to say if there is hope for Congo. Today, society is completely dependent upon technology. It's not as if governments could tell their citizens that all electronics are banned until an alternate resource is found to replace 3TG. I think that there could definitely be hope for Congo, but I don't necessarily think starting with the technology issue is the solution. It would take an immensely powerful force to rid the region of the rebel groups and to help set up a new, and stronger, form of government. The largest problem with the conflict seems to be that the government has no control, and the control that the government does have, is overshadowed by the poverty because soldiers are so easily payed off to ignore the goings on. Congo needs to start supporting its soldiers and start caring about the people. Without this, I feel like there is little hope, but that doesn't mean change is impossible. Ultimately, though, there is only so much that outside forces can do. Although, the UN could label the happenings as genocide, the Western world can only assist Congo so much before the Congolese government has to take over. Colonization, even if unintentionally, can't be repeated. If countries start interfering, Congo risks becoming dependent on said country, and that is not the way for the Congolese to regain control of their country.
